FAQs

Q1. How do CDs work and are they worth it?

A. A Certificate of Deposit (CD) is a savings product that locks in a fixed interest rate for a set term, typically anywhere from a few months to several years. You agree not to touch the money for that term, and in exchange you earn a higher rate than a regular savings account. For money you don’t need to touch in the short term, CDs can be very worthwhile: your rate is guaranteed even if rates drop, and your principal is FDIC-insured up to applicable limits.

Q2. What CD terms does Community National Bank & Trust offer?

A. We offer CDs with a range of terms to fit different timelines, from short-term options for goals less than a year out to longer terms for multi-year savings plans. Current available terms and rates are posted on this page and on our Product Rates page.

Q3. What’s the minimum to open a CD?

A. CDs have a higher opening deposit than a basic savings account because the rate is locked in. Current minimum opening deposits are listed alongside the rate for each available term. Talk to a banker at any of our banking centers if you want to discuss the right CD for your goal.

Q4. What happens if I need my money before the CD matures?

A. You can withdraw early, but an early withdrawal penalty will reduce your interest earnings. The size of the penalty depends on the term of the CD. Because of this, CDs work best for money you have a clear timeline for, like a down payment in 2 years or a planned purchase in 5.

Q5. What happens when my CD matures?

A. When your CD reaches the end of its term, you typically have a short grace period to decide what to do. You may withdraw the funds, move them to a different account, or roll them into a new CD at the current rate. We’ll send you a notice before maturity so you don’t miss the window.
